If your wet belt snapped, or you suspect it has, the first thing to understand is that every Ford belt-in-oil engine is an interference engine. The valves and the pistons share the same space at different moments, and the belt is the only thing keeping them apart. When the belt fails, they meet. What happens after that depends on how the belt failed and how quickly the engine stopped.
Why a snapped wet belt does so much damage
On a conventional dry timing belt engine there is often some warning, and on a chain engine a rattle usually comes first. A wet belt is different. It runs inside the engine in oil, so it degrades quietly. The belt material softens in the oil, teeth strip from the belt, and shed rubber collects in the oil pickup strainer in the sump. When the belt finally goes, the camshafts stop turning while the pistons keep moving, and any valves that happen to be open get struck.
Three ways a wet belt lets go
- The belt snaps. The most dramatic failure. Cam timing is lost instantly and valve contact is almost certain.
- Teeth strip off the belt. The belt can look intact from outside while the camshafts slip out of time. How much damage follows depends on how far the timing moved before the engine stopped.
- Debris starvation. Rubber shed from the degrading belt blocks the oil pickup, oil pressure collapses, and the engine is starved of oil. This can destroy bearings and the turbo even if the belt itself never breaks.
The realistic outcomes
It is not true that a snapped wet belt always writes off the engine. In our experience the outcomes fall into three broad groups:
- Best case. The belt failed or slipped at idle or low speed, the driver stopped immediately, and inspection shows no valve contact. A new belt kit, fresh oil and a cleaned pickup, and the engine lives on.
- Middle case. Bent valves. The cylinder head comes off, the valves are replaced and the head is rebuilt. Expensive, but the bottom end survives.
- Worst case. Valve contact at speed, damaged pistons, and bottom-end damage from debris or oil starvation. At that point a replacement engine is often the only sensible route, and that runs into several thousand pounds.
Diagnosis must come before assumptions
Nobody can tell you which of those outcomes you have from the driver’s seat, and anyone quoting a full engine over the phone without looking is guessing. The honest sequence is:
- A compression test or leak-down test across all cylinders. Even compression is a good sign; a dead cylinder tells you valves are bent.
- Strip the front of the engine and inspect the belt, the teeth and the oil pickup. The amount of debris in the sump tells us a lot about how long the belt had been degrading.
- Only then, a firm diagnosis and a fixed plan.
Why driving on makes it worse
The pattern we see most often is a driver who got a low oil pressure warning or a management light, the car still ran, so they carried on. Every mile after that warning is debris circulating through the bearings and the belt losing more teeth. A car that would have been a straightforward belt job becomes a head rebuild, and a head rebuild becomes an engine. If the oil pressure light comes on in a belt-in-oil Ford, stop. That single decision can be worth thousands of pounds.
Prevention is a fraction of the repair
Put the numbers side by side. A preventative wet belt replacement on the 1.0 EcoBoost is a fixed £1,356 including VAT, and diesel replacements start from £1,140 including VAT, with an exact fixed quote against your registration. Every replacement carries a 12-month warranty. Compare that with several thousand pounds for an engine after a failure, and the case for doing the belt on schedule is hard to argue with. We advise replacement at 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
