Ford Transit Custom wet belt: what owners actually need to know

The Transit Custom is the van that carries Britain’s trades: a tonne of tools and materials in the back, up and down the motorway all week, parked outside the job with the engine idling. If that is your van, the warning signs below are worth sixty seconds of your time, because catching a worn wet belt early is the difference between a planned day in the workshop and a wrecked engine.

Symptoms to watch for first

On the Transit Custom the wet belt failure pattern usually announces itself quietly before it announces itself expensively:

• The low oil pressure warning flickers on at idle, especially when the engine is hot, then clears.
• A rattle or ticking noise on cold start that fades as the engine warms.
• Rough running or hesitation that was not there before.
• An engine management light that keeps coming back.

What is happening underneath is that the belt, which runs in engine oil, is shedding rubber as it degrades. Those particles block the oil pickup strainer in the sump, oil pressure falls, and the belt itself begins to break up. When it needs doing

We advise replacement at 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford’s original guidance was much longer and has been shortened over the years as failures accumulated. A Custom that spends its life on short runs between jobs, or idling on site with the heater on, is ageing its belt faster than the mileage suggests. Oil quality and the correct oil specification are critical to belt life, so regular oil changes with the right oil genuinely matter on these engines.

We advise replacing the water pump at the same time for an extra £216, because everything is already apart and it avoids paying for the same stripdown twice if the pump fails later.
