Ford Transit wet belt: what owners actually need to know
A full-size Transit is not just a vehicle, it is usually a business. When a Transit is off the road, someone is losing money every single day it sits still. That is why the wet belt in the 2.0 EcoBlue engine deserves to be treated as a planned maintenance item, not something to think about after the warning light comes on.
Which Transits are affected
Every Transit with the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, fitted from 2016 onwards, uses a wet belt (belt-in-oil) for the cam timing. This applies across the range: panel vans, tippers, dropsides, minibuses and chassis cabs, in all power outputs. If your Transit was built in 2016 or later with the 2.0 diesel, it has a wet belt. What failure looks like in a working van
The belt runs inside the engine in oil, and as it ages it sheds fine rubber particles. In a Transit the consequences have a particular flavour, because these vans work hard:
- Shed material clogs the oil pickup strainer in the sump, starving the engine of oil.
- A low oil pressure warning appears, often flickering at idle first, easy to dismiss on a busy day.
- Cold starts become rough or noisy, with a rattle from the top of the engine.
- Finally the belt frays, jumps or snaps, the valves hit the pistons, and the engine is destroyed.
A Transit that fails like this is not looking at a belt job any more. It is looking at an engine replacement, a bill that can exceed the value of an older van, and weeks off the road while it is sorted. Compare that with a planned belt replacement done in a day.
