Booking a wet belt job raises one practical question straight away: how long does wet belt replacement take? The honest answer is the best part of a working day for most cars. It is not a job that can be done properly in an hour, and any garage offering to turn one round that fast is cutting corners you will pay for later.
Why the job takes most of a day
A wet belt is nothing like a conventional timing belt. On a normal belt engine the cover comes off the front of the engine and the belt is right there. A wet belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, so getting to it properly takes time. In outline, the job means:
- Draining the engine oil.
- Stripping the front of the engine to reach the belt, which on most of these engines is a labour-intensive job in itself.
- Removing the old belt and inspecting the whole system.
- Checking and clearing the oil pickup strainer in the sump. This is the step that must never be skipped, because shed belt material collects there, and a blocked pickup starves the new belt and the engine of oil.
- Fitting the new belt kit and setting the timing correctly.
- Refilling with fresh oil to the correct specification and fitting a new filter. Oil quality and the correct spec are critical to the life of the new belt, so this is not the place for cheap oil.
Each step depends on the one before it being done properly. Rushed work on a wet belt is how cars come back.
What can extend the job
Most replacements go to plan, but a few things can add time:
- Adding the water pump. We advise replacing the pump at the same time for an extra £216, because everything is already apart and the pump is driven by the same system. It adds a little time to the job but saves paying for a second stripdown later.
- Heavy debris in the pickup. If the belt has been degrading for a while, the sump and pickup can take real cleaning. That time is well spent.
- Seized fixings on high-mileage vehicles. Hard-worked vans, Transits especially, often have corroded or seized bolts that need careful removal rather than brute force.

Why rushing is a false economy
The wet belt’s whole failure mode is invisible from outside the engine. A fast job that skips the pickup clean, reuses old oil, or hurries the timing setup can leave the new belt degrading from day one. The belt kit and the labour are most of the cost either way, so the difference between a careful job and a rushed one is a small amount of time and a large amount of risk. Every replacement we do carries a 12-month warranty, and we intend never to see that belt again.
