Don't Risk Engine Failure
A failed wet belt can cause catastrophic engine damage costing £5,000-£10,000+ to repair. Preventative replacement is far more cost-effective than waiting for failure.
About the Ford Fiesta Wet Belt
The timing belt in oil (wet belt) on the Ford Fiesta runs inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. This design reduces noise and friction, but means oil quality has a direct impact on belt life.
Over time, oil oxidation, short journeys, or the wrong oil grade can accelerate belt degradation. If a wet belt fails, timing correlation is lost and severe internal engine damage can occur.

Ford Fiesta Wet Belt FAQs
What's included in the Ford Fiesta wet belt service?
Our Ford Fiesta wet belt replacement includes the belt, tensioner, fresh oil and filter, and our 12-month warranty. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote.
How long does the replacement take?
Most jobs are completed the same day - typically 5-7 hours depending on model and findings. Drop off in the morning, collect the same evening.
When should I replace the wet belt?
We recommend replacement at 60,000 miles or 6 years - whichever comes first. Don't wait for symptoms as the belt can fail suddenly.
What's included in the service?
Belt, tensioner, guides, new seals, fresh oil and filter, timing correlation check, test drive, and 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
What happens if the wet belt fails?
A failed wet belt causes catastrophic engine damage as pistons collide with valves. Repair costs typically £5,000-£10,000+. Preventative replacement is far cheaper.
Ford Fiesta wet belt: what owners actually need to know
The Fiesta is Britain’s favourite small car, and a huge number of them are used for exactly the kind of driving that is hardest on a wet belt: the school run, the commute into town, the trip to the shops. Short journeys, cold starts, engine never fully up to temperature. If that sounds like your Fiesta, this page is for you.
Which Fiestas have a wet belt?
Every Fiesta with the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine, from 2012 onwards, uses a wet belt (a belt-in-oil design) rather than a conventional dry timing belt or a chain. That covers the three-cylinder EcoBoost in all its power outputs, whether the car is a first car for a new driver or a family runabout.
One exception worth knowing about: the 1.1 Ti-VCT petrol fitted to later Fiestas uses a timing chain, not a wet belt. If you are not sure which engine is in your car, send us your registration and we will confirm.
Why short journeys are the problem
The wet belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil. In theory that reduces friction and noise. In practice the belt material slowly degrades in the oil, and tiny particles of rubber shed from the belt as it ages. Those particles collect in the oil pickup strainer at the bottom of the sump.
Cold starts make this worse. On a short journey the oil never gets properly hot, moisture and fuel dilution build up in it, and the belt spends more of its life running in contaminated, cold oil. A Fiesta that does six miles to school and back every day is working its belt harder, in real terms, than one doing motorway miles. Oil quality and the correct oil specification are critical to belt life, which is why we also advise sticking to proper oil change intervals on these engines.
What failure looks like in a Fiesta
The first signs are often subtle:
- A low oil pressure warning light, sometimes flickering at idle or on cold start.
- A rattle or whine from the engine, most noticeable when cold.
- Rough running or a management light that comes and goes.
- In later stages, the engine cutting out and refusing to restart.
The usual pattern is that shed belt material blocks the oil pickup, oil pressure drops, and the belt itself starts to break up. If the belt snaps or jumps teeth, the valves meet the pistons and the engine is finished. On a car worth a few thousand pounds, that usually means the car is written off. A new engine costs far more than the car.
When to replace it and what it costs
We advise replacing the belt at 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford’s original guidance was much longer, but it has been shortened over the years as real-world failures mounted. Age matters as much as mileage, so a low-mileage 2016 Fiesta doing short trips still needs the belt doing on time.
The job on a Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is a fixed price of £1,356 including VAT. We advise replacing the water pump at the same time for an extra £216, because everything is already apart and the pump is driven by the same system. Doing it later means paying for the stripdown twice. Every wet belt replacement comes with a 12-month warranty, and we offer same-day turnaround on most jobs when booked in advance.
