Ford Focus wet belt: what owners actually need to know

A Focus is often the family car that does everything: the daily commute, the weekend run to see grandparents, the loaded-up holiday trip. That means big miles, and big miles on the wrong engine means a wet belt that needs attention on schedule. The complication with the Focus is that some engines have a wet belt and some do not, so the first job is working out which one you have.

Working out which engine you have

Two Focus engines use a wet belt (belt-in-oil):

• The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, fitted from 2012 onwards in various power outputs.
• The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel, fitted from 2018 onwards.

The 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost petrol engines use a timing chain, not a wet belt, so they are not part of this conversation. If the badge or paperwork leaves you guessing, send us your registration and we will confirm exactly what is under your bonnet.

What failure looks like in a Focus

On both engines the belt runs in engine oil, and as it ages the belt material degrades and sheds fine particles into the oil. The typical failure pattern we see:

• Shed rubber builds up in the oil pickup strainer in the sump.
• Oil pressure drops, sometimes triggering a low oil pressure warning at idle or on cold start.
• The belt itself starts to fray and can jump teeth or snap.
• The result is valves meeting pistons and, in most cases, a destroyed engine.

High-mileage commuting is not a free pass. Steady motorway miles are gentler than cold-start town driving, but the belt is ageing in oil the whole time, and the mileage limit arrives quickly on a car covering 15,000 or 20,000 miles a year. Oil quality and the correct oil specification are critical to belt life, so skipped or stretched oil changes shorten its life further.

Replacement interval

We advise replacement at 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford’s original guidance was much longer and has been shortened over the years, so do not rely on what the handbook said when the car was new. On a commuting Focus the mileage limit will usually arrive before the age limit.

Cost, warranty and booking

The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol is a fixed price of £1,356 including VAT. The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel starts from £1,140 including VAT, with the exact fixed quote confirmed against your registration. Either way the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

We advise replacing the water pump at the same time for an extra £216. Everything is already apart, and a pump failure later would mean repeating most of the labour. Every wet belt replacement carries a 12-month warranty, and most jobs are turned around the same day when booked in advance.
